Due to retirement, the Alcona County Library is accepting applications for the position of Library Director. 

The Director is accountable to an appointed Library Board of Trustees and represents the Library in the community.  This position plans programs, services; administers library policies and financial controls; hires, and supervises staff, operations and develops collections.  The Director provides leadership within the library and the community and serves as the official representative of all five branches of the library. 

Desired qualifications for the Director include a Level 1 Permanent Professional Librarian Certificate from the Library of Michigan. Candidates without a MLS or MLIS may be considered based on relevant experience.  The position offers a competitive salary range of $62,500 - $72,500, based on experience.  Compensation includes a comprehensive benefits package consisting of retirement, health coverage, dental, vision, life insurance and long term disability.  This position will be available January 1, 2027.  

Alcona County Library is a Class 3 library system, in rural Northeastern Michigan. The library has headquarters in Harrisville, and serves a population of 10,167. The library branches are in Glennie, Harrisville, Hubbard Lake, Lincoln, and Mikado,.  The library provides excellent service and programs, public computers and internet connectivity at all branches with free access to almost 35,000 e-books, and streaming services. In 2026, Alcona County Library passed a 10 year millage and moved into a new library branch in Hubbard Lake.

Alcona County is located in NE Michigan along the Lake Huron coast.  The county consists of seven towns and villages plus many more small hamlets.  The area depends largely on agriculture, forestry and tourist dollars to keep its economy vital.  It is an outdoorsman’s paradise with the most scenic combinations of forests, lakes, rivers and beaches anywhere in Michigan or the Midwest.  Wildlife is abundant and varied, pleasing both the nature watcher and the hunter.  The lakes, rivers and Lake Huron provide many recreational possibilities.
