Job Title: Public Library Intern – Children’s Services

Location: Fowlerville District Library, 130 South Grand Avenue, Fowlerville, Michigan

Department: Children’s Services

Reports to: Children’s Services Librarian and/or Library Director

Job Type: Part-time Temporary (25-30 hours per week)

Duration: June 15 through November 14, 2026

Pay Range: $15 - $17 per hour

Position Summary:

Do you love storytime giggles, messy crafts, and helping kids discover the joy of reading? Join our team! We’re a busy, community-loved public library serving about 18,000 residents in a rural area where library programs are a big deal. Our Children’s Services Intern will jump right into the fun helping create memorable experiences for kids and families while gaining hands-on children’s services experience.

This internship is a great fit for an MLIS student or recent graduate who wants to build real-world skills in a supportive, high-energy environment where your ideas are welcomed and your work truly matters.

What You’ll Do

  • Plan and lead children’s programs like storytimes, crafts, STEM activities, and seasonal events
  • Prep supplies and materials (glitter may be involved -- consider yourself warned!)
  • Connect with local schools, childcare providers, and community partners through outreach
  • Create eye-catching displays, flyers, and social media posts to promote programs
  • Provide welcoming, friendly service to kids, caregivers, and families
  • Pitch creative program ideas (We love trying new things!)
  • Assist with children’s collections and keep spaces inviting and engaging
  • Support other projects as needed

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the intern should be able to:

  • Speak clearly and hear people of all ages, including small children.
  • Move, bend, and stay active during programs
  • Lift up to 25 lbs. (books, program supplies, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current MLIS student or recent MLIS graduate from an ALA-accredited program in youth services or similar
  • Enthusiasm working with children and families
  • Creativity, flexibility, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed
  • Strong communication and people skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Comfort with basic technology and social media

Work Schedule:

25-30 hours per week, including some evenings and occasional Saturdays
