At MLA, we are committed to using our talents to amplify our members’ voices and highlight the value and importance of libraries in all 83 Michigan counties.
We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Social Media Coordinator to amplify our mission of supporting Michigan’s libraries with a focus on disseminating news, amplifying positive library stories, and promoting MLA’s initiatives.
This role is ideal for someone passionate about advocacy, community engagement, and the transformative power of libraries. You’ll curate and create content that educates, inspires, and mobilizes our audience—from librarians and policymakers to library lovers across the state. If you’re skilled at creating and curating shareable content and crafting accurate and engaging posts to keep audiences informed, we’d love to hear from you!

- Michigan/national library news (e.g., Michigan library advocacy, news affecting the library profession, national advocacy).
- MLA updates (e.g., MLA programs and events, advocacy efforts, resources)
- Use scheduling tools (e.g., Hootsuite) and work with MLA staff to plan content in advance.
- Community Engagement:
- Share uplifting news stories from Michigan libraries (tagging libraries when relevant).
- Like and repost content from Michigan libraries (e.g., unique collections, community impact).
- Monitor and respond to comments/messages in a timely manner, seeking input from MLA staff, and escalating sensitive comments to MLA leadership as appropriate.
- Tag libraries/legislators/stakeholders in relevant posts.
- Engage with other library social media pages by liking and commenting on their posts.
- Campaign Support and Content Creation:
- Assist with campaigns like Michigan Library Appreciation Month, MI Right to Read week, MLA Call for Ambassadors, and more
- Collaborate on member spotlight features (gathering photos/testimonials via email).
- Collaborate on copy and graphics for informational posts and infographics.
- Brand Consistency:
- Adhere to MLA’s voice when sharing news and updates
- Use hashtags to find and organize content like #LOVEMILibraries #MILibraries, #MiRightToRead
- Ensure graphics and images are formatted appropriately for each social network
Requirements:
- Experience managing social media for organizations (nonprofit/library experience a plus).
- Experience with Social Media Management tools (Hootsuite, Meta suite, or similar tools) and Canva.
- Strong writing skills; ability to adopt MLA’s positive and professional voice.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working remotely.
- Knowledge of libraries and Michigan’s library landscape (preferred but not required).
- A personal computer to complete work assignments
- Reliable and secure internet access for weekly virtual check-ins
