This newly created management position is located at our Muskegon Heights Library in the City of Muskegon Heights, locally known as the "City of Friendly People". Once a manufacturing community, it is now in a redevelopment phase with so many up-and-coming opportunities in the works, which makes the incoming Library Manager a pivotal role for MADL. We are relying on this person to connect with community partners and engage with the neighborhoods and schools to keep the library a strong public resource. Only a 10-minute drive from the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan and surrounded by other local parks, shopping, and entertainment venues makes this an ideal location to work. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Manages daily operations of the Muskegon Heights branch.  

·         Implements and monitors library policies and procedures.

·         Collaborates with the Programs Manager and other programming staff on appropriate library programs, developing outreach strategies and materials to engage with the community.

·         Professionally executes or facilitates programs in a safe and responsible way.

·         Builds and manages a portfolio of community partnerships, including schools, neighborhood associations, and other groups for the purpose of expanding library services into the community as well developing new programs through innovative connections to the assets of community partners.

·         Organizes and hosts public events and works as part of a team to create and facilitate the agenda in a range of settings or locations.

·         Communicates and builds strong community bonds by working with local community leaders.

·         Selects and hires/contracts with vendors, authors, or other outside agencies to assist with programs or services.

·         Attends local municipal meetings representing MADL.

·         Works with the Library Board and Friends of the Library groups as necessary.

·         Acts as liason with township maintenance/ supervisors and the library administrative staff to assure proper building maintenance and operation.

·         Develops, writes, or coordinates grant functions, stipends, and financial aid opportunities.

·         Develops and implements goals, programs, and procedures for the branch(es), coordinates activities and essential tasks.

·         Recruits and interviews for open staff positions.

·         Manages and supervises staff and volunteers in day-to-day activities, including scheduling, training, discipling, and conducting performance evaluations.

·         Provides instruction and assistance to patrons on the use of all library services and equipment.

·         Responds to reference questions or refers the questions to Administration when appropriate.

·         Resolves patron complaints and requests with discretion and good judgement in keeping with MADL policies.

·         May participate, recommend or advise in circulation materials selection processes.

·         Markets the library by developing and/or assisting with public service-oriented programming and press interviews.

·         Prepares and maintains required reports and records using approved formats in a timely fashion.

·         Demonstrates a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion by offering library programs, collections and services that are representative of diverse populations.

·         This position supports MADL’s mission and strategic plan, which involves a high level of collaboration to create positive change with an emphasis on the local neighborhoods and public in the Muskegon Heights community.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

·         Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences, Education, Social Work, Nonprofit Administration, Ethnic Studies, Labor Studies or related degree preferred;

·         OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  

·         Minimum two years’ experience in community engagement and outreach.

·         Experience in public speaking and/ or event planning.
